Give yourself time to settle into the mountain scenery during your Switzerland vacation.
If Switzerland is on your travel wish list, you probably have a few things in mind already: beautiful mountain views, charming villages, and plenty of Swiss chocolate. But there’s so much more to enjoy, from afternoons by the lake to a soak in warm thermal waters. The fun is figuring out which combination feels right for you.
I returned from Switzerland this October with so many ideas for future trips. The thermal spa at Bad Ragaz was a highlight, and Ascona’s lakeside setting made it a personal favorite. Along the way, I explored towns, visited hotels, and met the local partners who help bring these trips together—all with an eye toward what you might love, too!
Whether you’re dreaming of a couple’s getaway, a family adventure, or a trip with several generations, you don’t need to fit everything into one visit. A thoughtfully planned Switzerland vacation gives you time for the experiences you’re excited about, with room to settle in and enjoy being there. Here are a few things to consider as you start dreaming about yours.
Where Should You Go on Your First Switzerland Trip?
Exploring Switzerland firsthand helps me match your travel wish list with the right places and experiences.
A helpful starting point is to choose a few experiences you’re most excited about. You might want mountain scenery paired with time by a lake, or a city stay followed by several nights at a resort. Once those priorities are clear, we can build a route that connects them comfortably.
My own journey included Zurich, Bad Ragaz, the St. Moritz and Pontresina area, Ascona, Wengen, and Lucerne. Each offered something different, but you don’t need to visit them all to have a memorable Switzerland vacation. A thoughtful selection gives you time to appreciate each place.
Zurich and Lucerne: City Time Between Mountain Stays
A stay in Lucerne makes room for waterfront walks, local dining, and exploring the city.
Zurich and Lucerne are worth considering as part of the experience, with time to explore on foot, enjoy a meal, and get to know your surroundings. Depending on your flights and overall route, a city stay can also give you a comfortable beginning or ending to the trip. After an overnight flight, having time to settle in can make that first day feel much more manageable.
For your itinerary, we would look at how much city time you enjoy and what you want to do while you’re there. A guided walk can provide an introduction, while an open afternoon leaves room for shops, cafés, and discoveries along the way. The right balance depends on whether you prefer a full day of sightseeing or a little more flexibility.
Wengen and the Swiss Alps: Time to Enjoy the Mountains
A mountain excursion can be a memorable part of your trip, with time to take in the views.
If your Switzerland dreams include an Alpine village and mountain excursions, Wengen deserves a look. This car-free village adds a different rhythm to the trip, with rail travel forming part of the arrival experience. My stay at Grand Hotel Belvedere was paired with an excursion to Jungfraujoch, giving me a chance to experience both the village and a major mountain outing.
When planning your stay, we would consider which excursions matter most, how much walking you’re comfortable with, and how much downtime you want. Allowing more than a quick overnight also gives you a chance to enjoy the setting between activities. Mountain weather deserves consideration, too, so it helps to discuss priorities and possible alternatives before you travel.
Pontresina and St. Moritz: Another Side of the Swiss Alps
A stay at Grand Hotel Kronenhof pairs historic elegance with Pontresina’s mountain setting.
If mountain scenery is high on your wish list, the Engadine Valley offers another beautiful option. St. Moritz combines its lakeside setting with upscale shopping and dining, while nearby Pontresina has a quieter village atmosphere and traditional Engadine architecture. Choosing between them comes down to the setting you’d most enjoy returning to after a day of exploring.
During my visit, I stayed at Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina and explored St. Moritz and Diavolezza, where a cable car takes you to views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. For your trip, this region could bring together mountain outings, scenic rail travel, and time at a beautiful hotel. We would look at how it fits your route and interests before deciding whether it belongs alongside—or instead of—a stay in the Jungfrau region.
Ascona: A Lakeside Change of Pace
Time by Lake Maggiore brings a relaxing lakeside element to your Switzerland itinerary.
Ascona was a favorite stop for me, and it’s a place I’m especially excited to introduce to clients. Set on Lake Maggiore in Ticino, its colorful waterfront and Mediterranean atmosphere bring another side of Switzerland into the picture. It’s a lovely destination to consider if time by the water belongs on your wish list.
A stay here could complement time in the mountains, particularly if you enjoy a mix of exploring and relaxing. The important question is whether Ascona fits comfortably within your available days. Sometimes extending a stay in a place you’re excited about adds more enjoyment than squeezing in another destination.
Make Wellness Part of Your Switzerland Vacation
Leave room for a slower pace when your Switzerland plans include a wellness stay.
If relaxation is one of your reasons for traveling, give it a place in the itinerary from the beginning. The thermal spa at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz was one of my highlights, and my trip also included Bürgenstock Resort and its Alpine Spa above Lake Lucerne. Both gave me ideas for travelers who want wellness to be a meaningful part of their stay.
Choosing a hotel for its spa works best when you have time to use it. An open afternoon, a leisurely morning, or an additional night can give you space to enjoy the property without watching the clock. We can plan that time alongside your excursions so you return home feeling that you enjoyed the hotels you chose.
How Do Trains and Private Transfers Fit Together?
Scenic rail travel can make the journey between destinations part of the experience.
Scenic rail travel can be a memorable part of a Switzerland vacation, and our journey included the Bernina Express. We also used private transfers, which offered another way to connect destinations. For your trip, the best combination depends on the route, your luggage, and how you prefer to travel.
The details between stops make a difference to your day. We would consider the number of connections, the distance from the station to your hotel, and whether assistance or a private transfer would make an arrival easier. Thinking through those details beforehand allows you to spend more of the journey enjoying your surroundings.
You also don’t need to make every travel day a major sightseeing day. Sometimes arriving, unpacking, and enjoying dinner is plenty. A comfortable itinerary accounts for the energy it takes to move between places, especially when traveling with children or a larger family group.
Choose Luxury Hotels That Fit Your Travel Style
The Chedi Andermatt was one of the properties I visited to learn more about Switzerland’s luxury hotel options.
A beautiful hotel can become one of the places you remember most fondly from your vacation. Its location, atmosphere, dining, and amenities all shape the experience, so choosing the right property involves more than comparing room photos. You may want a village setting where you can walk out and explore, or a resort where spending the afternoon on the property is part of the appeal.
For families, room arrangements and amenities deserve particular attention. For couples, the priorities might be a view, a spa, or a special setting for dinner. My trip included overnight stays and hotel inspections, giving me firsthand context to help match those preferences with suitable properties.
Before choosing a hotel, I also like to consider how it fits with the rest of your stay. A property you’re excited about deserves enough time in the schedule to enjoy it. That might mean fewer planned outings or an extra night in a destination.
How Much Should You Include in Your Switzerland Itinerary?
A thoughtfully paced itinerary leaves time to appreciate the scenery along the way.
It’s easy to keep adding places as you research, especially when every photo gives you another reason to visit. Before committing to a route, consider how many days you have, how often you’re willing to change hotels, and which experiences you would be disappointed to miss. Those answers help us decide where to spend your time.
My visit was a familiarization trip designed for travel advisors, so we covered considerable ground and visited multiple properties. For your vacation, I would adapt that pace to your needs. Fewer hotel changes and longer stays may give you more time for the moments you’re looking forward to, whether that’s a mountain excursion, a family outing, or an afternoon at the spa.
Your travel dates matter as well. We would consider seasonal operations and the experiences available during your visit rather than assuming every activity fits every time of year. Building around your priorities helps create a trip that feels cohesive from arrival to departure.
