What Is Adventures by Disney? A Guide for Travelers Who Think Disney Means Theme Parks
Adventures by Disney takes families far beyond the theme parks to destinations around the world.
When you hear the words “Disney vacation,” there’s a good chance your mind immediately goes to Cinderella Castle, Mickey Mouse and theme parks. But Disney vacations can look very different from that.
You could be exploring a castle in Germany, learning from a local guide in Costa Rica, seeing elephants in Thailand or cruising the Danube through the heart of Europe. And you can do all of it with the level of organization and service Disney is known for—without setting foot inside a theme park.
That’s the idea behind Adventures by Disney, Disney’s collection of guided vacations around the world. For the right traveler, it can be a really interesting way to experience a destination.
So, What Exactly Is Adventures by Disney?
Adventure Guides help manage the details so families can focus on experiencing the destination.
Adventures by Disney offers guided vacations to destinations around the world. These aren’t trips built around Disney characters or themed attractions. Instead, Disney takes the behind-the-scenes expertise it has developed managing complicated vacations and applies it to real-world destinations.
Each itinerary includes accommodations, transportation within the trip, many meals and activities, along with Adventure Guides who travel with the group. The goal is simple: take care of the logistics so you can spend more time actually experiencing the destination.
For travelers who love the ease of a well-planned vacation but don’t necessarily want to manage every detail themselves, that can be very appealing.
What Makes Adventures by Disney Different?
Adventures by Disney combines guided travel with hands-on experiences that bring travelers closer to the destination.
There are plenty of companies offering escorted tours, so I wouldn’t choose Adventures by Disney simply because Disney’s name is attached to it. Where it tends to stand out is in the details.
Depending on the itinerary, that might mean special access, hands-on cultural activities, local experts or experiences that would take quite a bit of coordination to arrange independently. Then there are the Adventure Guides, who manage logistics, help families navigate the destination and handle many of the little details that can otherwise pull your attention away from the trip.
For the parent who is usually keeping track of tickets, transportation, reservations and what time everyone needs to leave the hotel, there’s something pretty wonderful about letting someone else do that for a while.
Is Adventures by Disney Just for Families With Young Kids?
Adventures by Disney creates experiences designed to engage travelers of different ages.
Definitely not. Depending on the itinerary and departure, you’ll find families with teenagers, multigenerational groups, couples and adult travelers. Adventures by Disney also offers Adult Exclusive departures on select itineraries.
Where I think ABD can be especially interesting for families is its ability to create experiences that appeal to different generations at the same time. Kids aren’t simply tagging along on an adult tour, and adults aren’t spending their entire vacation doing activities designed for children.
That balance can be difficult to create on your own, particularly with a larger family group. It’s one of the reasons guided travel can work so well for multigenerational trips. I talk more about that in Why Multi-Generational Travel Is More Popular Than Ever.
Adventures by Disney Goes Far Beyond Europe
Adventures by Disney itineraries extend far beyond Europe, with wildlife and cultural experiences around the world.
Europe may be an obvious fit for guided travel, but this is where Adventures by Disney starts to challenge the idea of what a “Disney vacation” can be.
Its itineraries reach destinations around the world, with experiences centered on the place you’re visiting rather than Disney itself. You might encounter wildlife, explore historic sites, learn from local experts or participate in cultural activities you probably wouldn’t discover simply by checking into a hotel and sightseeing on your own.
Disney isn’t the destination. Disney is helping you experience the destination.
That distinction is important—and it’s probably the biggest misconception I’d want someone to understand before dismissing Adventures by Disney as “too Disney.”
What About River Cruises and Expedition Travel?
Adventures by Disney brings its guided approach to river cruising, creating an easy way to experience multiple destinations in one trip.
Adventures by Disney also brings its guided approach to other styles of travel, including select European river cruises. You get many of the things I already love about river cruising—unpacking once, waking up somewhere new and seeing several destinations in one trip—with programming designed to work particularly well for families and multigenerational groups.
If you’re curious about river cruising itself, you can start with my guide to whether a luxury river cruise is right for you.
And yes, Disney can even take you to places like Antarctica. At that point, you certainly aren’t traveling for Disney entertainment. You’re going for wildlife, landscapes and the experience of reaching one of the most remote places on Earth. If that’s on your list, I have a separate guide to what an Antarctica expedition cruise is really like.
Is Adventures by Disney Right for You?
A Disney vacation doesn't have to mean a theme park—or even a castle.
I wouldn’t recommend Adventures by Disney simply because someone loves Disney. I’d start by thinking about how you like to travel.
It can be a great fit if you want to see and do a lot without managing every logistical detail yourself, especially if you’re traveling with different generations. You’re paying not only for hotels, transportation, guides, activities, and included experiences, but also for something less tangible: ease.
If your favorite trips involve waking up each morning and deciding what to do over coffee, wandering without much of a schedule or spending several days in one place with very little planned, a structured group itinerary may feel restrictive. Neither way of traveling is better—they’re simply different.
That’s why I don’t think the question is simply, “Is Adventures by Disney worth it?” A better question is: “Is this the way I want to experience this destination?”
That’s really the theme of this entire Disney Month. There isn’t one type of Disney traveler, and there isn’t one type of Disney vacation. My role isn’t to convince you that one is better than another. It’s to help you figure out which experience fits the way you want to travel.
And sometimes, the right Disney vacation doesn’t include a castle at all.
