Italy vs. Italy: How to Choose the Right Experience for Your Trip

Venice is iconic, but how you experience it makes all the difference.

One of the most common things I hear from clients when we start planning an Italy trip is some version of this: we want to do it all.

I understand the impulse completely. Italy has earned that kind of enthusiasm! But the clients who come home most satisfied are rarely the ones who covered the most ground. They are the ones who leaned into a version of Italy that actually fit them.

If you’re just starting to think about how to approach your first trip, this builds on the way I think about pacing and structure, which I shared in my Italy Travel Guide.

Right now, I have clients planning trips that look completely different from one another. A family is heading to Milan, Lake Como, and Cinque Terre, exploring Northern Italy at an unhurried pace. A honeymoon couple is doing the classic route of Venice, Florence, and Rome. And a repeat client, on her third trip, is spending her entire time on the Amalfi Coast and in Sicily, with no cities, no rushing, just deep immersion in the south.

Each of these trips is right. But each is right for a specific kind of traveler, at a specific moment.

Tuscany: For the Traveler Who Wants to Exhale

A quiet stone street in a Tuscan village with rustic buildings, greenery, and a parked scooter along the path.

Tuscany is less about checking sights off a list and more about slowing down and simply being there.

Tuscany is where you finally get to slow down. Rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and wine that reflects the landscape it comes from. This is where you stay in one place for several nights and actually settle in.

It might look like a farmhouse outside Montalcino, a villa near San Gimignano, or a small hotel in the heart of Chianti. Day trips to Florence or Siena feel intentional rather than rushed, thanks to a quiet base to return to.

My family spent time in the Tuscan countryside during our last trip to Italy, and the drives alone were worth it. There is something about that landscape in the late afternoon light that makes you want to pull over and stay a while.

Lake Como: For the Traveler Who Wants Something Cinematic

Lake Como offers a polished, cinematic version of Italy.

Lake Como operates at a different pace entirely. It is glamorous in a quiet, old-world way, with grand hotels, ferry crossings between villages, and gardens that feel almost suspended in time.

The towns of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio each have their own character, and moving between them by boat creates a rhythm that feels effortless.

It tends to appeal to travelers who want beauty without the intensity of Rome or Venice, a place to wander, linger over lunch, and feel a little removed from the faster pace of the more traditional routes.

The Amalfi Coast: For the Traveler Who Wants to Be Undone by Beauty

A dramatic coastal road and stone bridge overlook the bright blue sea along the Amalfi Coast, framed by pink flowers.

The Amalfi Coast is as breathtaking as it is unforgettable.

There is nothing subtle about the Amalfi Coast. It is dramatic, vertical, and spectacular in a way that genuinely catches you off guard, even if you have seen every photograph.

The first glimpse from above the coastline, when the sea opens up below you, is something I still think about years later.

The Amalfi Coast works best when you stop trying to control every detail. The towns are steep, the roads are narrow, and everything takes longer than expected. In return, you get Positano, Ravello, hidden lemon groves, and evenings on a terrace where the view makes every inconvenience feel insignificant.

And the Classic Route?

The best Italy trips are the ones you experience together.

Venice, Florence, and Rome remain the foundation of Italian travel for a reason. They are extraordinary cities, and a well-planned first trip through all three is something I believe in completely.

But “classic” does not mean simple.

The difference between a trip that feels transformative and one that feels exhausting almost always comes down to pacing, hotel selection, and the space between the major experiences. Venice, in particular, tends to surprise people, especially when you experience it outside peak hours, something my daughter captured beautifully in her post, My Heart is Buried in Venice.

The Question I Always Start With

A woman wearing a straw hat walks down a quiet cobblestone street in Italy, capturing the feeling of exploring for the first time.

Your first moments in Italy should feel like discovery, not a checklist.

Before I begin building any Italy itinerary, I ask one question: what do you want to feel at the end of this trip?

Rested. Inspired. Connected. Like you finally experienced something you have been imagining for years.

The answer almost always points clearly toward one version of Italy over another.
